Dealing With Clogged Gutters

Drip, drip, drip.

Finding it hard to sleep at night because of leaks coming from the ceiling? Wait, you just have the roof checked. It doesn’t have any broken shingles or any holes on it.

Well, most homeowners only go as far as cleaning the walls and the roof outside of their home. However, there’s another part of the house that needs to be cleaned up regularly.

Gutters, a.k.a. “rain catchers”, are built to protect the overall structure of a house. It channels water away via a downspout from the roof to the ground, preventing unexpected leaks from happening or painted exteriors from peeling off.

If the gutters are clogged, it blocks the flow of rainwater – causing it to overflow and leak through the roof, the ceiling, and the basement. It causes mold, rust, and rot, as well as a breeding place for mosquitoes.

So, how do you deal with clogged gutters?

1. Know why the gutters are clogged. A whole lot of reasons, there are. It could be leaves or twigs, which can pile up on the gutters as they fall down the ground or in the gutters as they are swept around by the wind. It could also be a poorly-installed downspout, which can trap debris by the gutter’s entry point or exit point and block the flow of rainwater to where it should be going.

2. Know which part of the gutters is clogged. This is very important in order for you to do the right cleaning approach, so as not to further clog it or damage it. Some gutters are built extensively, which can be hard for those who are not familiar with it to reach the clogged part. Other gutters are “tales as old as time” or made out of soft materials, which can be fragile enough to break apart when cleaned rigorously.

3. Clean it up or have it cleaned up right away! It’s not enough to just know why the gutters are clogged or which part of the gutters are clogged. It’s time for you to take action! You can either clean it up yourself or have someone else to clean it up for you. Either way, you should make it a habit to clean the gutters at least 4 times a year before it further damages your house with leaks, mold, rust, rot, or even mosquitoes.

Don’t wait for the rainwater to seep through inside your house. Save it from unexpected leaks.

What’s more, you don’t have to clean up the gutters all by yourself!
